TechSMART Digital Literacy for Veterans and Seniors

TechSMART Digital Literacy for Veterans and Seniors

Tech-SMART Digital Literacy for Veterans is a wrap-around training and education program that promotes best practices for the use of computers and broadband to reduce mental and physical health disparities for residents who live in underserved communities.  Last year Digipreneurship partnered with the Church Coalition, UF/ProTalks Prostate Cancer, and N.E. Florida Women Veterans to continue research on health disparities in key areas throughout Northeast Florida to improve outcomes for a new study by the University of Florida, Uf Shands, and The Humana Foundation. The study revealed that New Town Health Zone is institutionally deficient in health care, environment conditions, workforce readiness, housing, income, and healthy food choices.

Digipreneurship University has partnered with Health-SMART Holistic to Reduce Health Disparities for Seniors. A 10 member smart pantry of faith-based organizations recently became Leadership and Learning Partners to Increase Broadband Education in Florida.

DigiU is open for new member registration and ongoing enrollment for those who are impacted by massive health disparities, from diabetes, poor heart conditions, Cancer, all compounded by the external threats post-Covid19. To address these issues, a coalition has convened to address holistic health disparities by embracing tech smart and smart device safety strategies to serve as an extension to families-in-crisis.

Recommend a friend or family member for the Digipreneur Tech-SMART Advocacy course. A six-week course starting this year to serve as a hub for technical assistance through hybrid to promote healthy options with access to better quality of foods, beneficial eating and cooking choices.

Enroll today to learn more about TechSMART for Veterans and Seniors and launch a local program in your community to share, support, and access technical assistance for your food pantry or community garden.

At the present, our coalition is building capacity to increase demand and sustainability.

Why your next technology platform should be one that your agency can maintain and protects sensitive personal information.

Why your next technology platform should be one that your agency can maintain and protects sensitive personal information.

As corrections agencies continue to expand their use of telehealth, they should keep the following three things in mind:

  1. Coordination with health care and behavioral health providers can help narrow down telehealth options.

Virtual appointments have been around for years, but in 2020, Medicaid and other non-publicly funded insurance options expanded their coverage to include telemedicine and telehealth services. As a result, more providers are able to offer telehealth appointments to provide an array of services, including mental health and substance use disorder assessment, diagnosis, and individual counseling depending on the state. Corrections agencies looking to implement telehealth in their facilities should coordinate with local providers to find out which technology options they’ve explored and/or currently use and what lessons they have learned so far. This information can be valuable to the planning process, reducing hiccups to implementing telehealth with the correctional health care provider and any community-based treatment providers.

  1. The selected technology platform should be one that your agency can maintain and protects sensitive personal information.

With many software options, corrections agencies should know what technology their facilities can support prior to selecting a telehealth platform. This includes making sure there is sufficient broadband access within the jail or prison and that tablets, phones, or computers with videos are available for the health care interactions. This is particularly important for rural communities that may have more limited broadband service.

Corrections agencies will want to ensure that security provisions are included in any software they purchase, especially since telemedicine software often integrates electronic health care records. The behavioral health partner can be a great resource because they have likely already determined which platform best protects their clients’ information. Agencies need to also consult with their information technology staff to ensure certain firewalls are in place to protect people’s private information and to learn how to make live health care interaction possible in a controlled environment.

  1. Telehealth appointments require dedicated space for private conversations.

Since people often share personal information with providers, corrections agencies should set aside private space for telehealth appointments. While space is often limited in correctional facilities, some creative options can include using small offices to serve as virtual phone booths or converting other little-used areas into dedicated space as long as these are equipped with the appropriate technology and video capabilities. For jails or prisons that want to allow multiple people to receive telehealth consultations at the same time, they can identify a large area where multiple stations can be created. However, corrections agencies should be mindful that simply dividing a small room into “virtual cubicles” can lead to privacy concerns.

Verizon extends reach of low-cost broadband access and opportunity

Verizon extends reach of low-cost broadband access and opportunity

The program will be offered for as little as $20 a month to households that qualify.

Verizon has begun offering its broadband program Fios Forward to low-income households. The service, introduced in April 2020, will be offered to new and existing customers who qualify for the Lifeline government assistance program for as little as $20 a month, the wireless carrier said Monday.

“Our guiding principle is that we create the networks that move the world forward,” Frank Boulben, senior vice president of consumer marketing and product at Verizon, said in a statement. “Far too many families will be left behind if their home Internet can’t keep pace with today’s demands for learning and work.”

Three price tiers will be offered to qualified customers under one of Verizon’s Mix & Match Fios Home Internet plans. The $20 Fios 200 plan offers up to 200 Mbps, while a $40 Fios 400 plan offers up to 400 Mbps. The $60 Fios Gigabit Connection offers up to 880 Mbps as well as a router.

Qualifying new customers will also be eligible for additional promotions and benefits, including getting up to 12 months of the new streaming service Discovery Plus for free.

Lifeline, created in 1985, is a $1.5 billion subsidy program designed to help low-income families pay for phone service by giving out a $9.25-a-month subsidy. It was initially designed to provide discounts on traditional phone service for qualifying low-income families.

The FCC expanded the program in 2016 to allow the subsidy to be used to pay for broadband service.

Urban Broadband: Hidden in Plain Sight

Communities invest in a wide range of infrastructure projects. Fiber optic networks fit well within the historic role of municipal investment to improve the business climate and quality of life and are often lower cost when compared with other essential infrastructure.
